I think the security status thing is a red herring. The biggest problem with EVE is that it pretends that a free-market system could function, right down to a commodities market, without legal protection of private property. We've had the offical word that fraud even on a massive scale, is okay in the game in any area, that robbery is fine in 0.0 space and not punished below 0.5. And that even murder will not get you killed in more than 1/2 the solar systems in the game, although it does have long-term consequences.
But in high security space where Concorde will completely annihilate you (sans exploits anyways) for raising a finger against any player you're not at war with, but it totally okay with theft, fraud, etc? This is pretty silly. Capitialism of any real kind depends on law enforcement protecting the rights of property owners. A breakdown in law and order is the death of any government, but damage and loss of property is the most profound anti-capitalist act.
This crap about whether mining into a can is bad or not doesn't make any sense. Feel free to check my garbage cans when I leave them at the curb on garbage day take anything you want, but if I use clean new garbage cans as storage containers in my garage, or use an old garbage can to keep salt in for my driveway ice, and leave it on my porch, you'd be stealing by taking those cans or their contents, whether the container is a garbage can or not.
And people, the Trit and Pyr supply for ship production would simply dry up if it wasn't for people can mining and doing indy pick-up. There is no other way to profitably mine solo at this time, and there is NO fun at all in Scordite/Veldspar mining to begin with (an important industry right now with some many of you people wanting to buy Battleships). You all wanna pay NPC price for Battleships? Right now it's Veld and Scord strip miners wasting hours of their time in a boring task that are making current prices possible. Why make it easier to grief them?
Sigh. That having been said, all I want as a miner of medium ores is to have jettison cans (and secure cans for that matter) marked as property, like drones, and attacks on them or taking things from them would first be warned against (until you turned the warnig off or clicked okay and went ahead) and then make the thief/griefer a weapons-free target, in that star system only, for the next hour, so that anyone in that system can destroy them.
All I want is the right to defend my own property, since Concorde won't do it. If he's real good at stealing ore, he'll get his load back to the station and/or maybe jump to another system, but he won't be able to rip me or anyone else off for load after load, cuz someone will go grab a decent combat ship, scramble him and smash him to bits.
This would address the most ridiculous aspect of the current situation, wherein a guy can make repeated trips to and from one belt, stealing from one or more miners right under their noses, without the miners being able to do anything. This is a FLAW in game mechanics.
Oh, and as for the secure can thing.... Talk to me when the only ones useful for miners finally work.
